Balance is tricky isn't it? It seems every time we get the hang of it life has shifted and we have to re-balance. At least this is one way of looking at it. We are creatures of habit. Routine and checking off items on a forever list makes us feel accomplished. In my twenties routine wasn't even in my vocabulary but as I grow wiser I find there is much beauty to ritual, especially since becoming a mother. However, I feel having attachment to a specific ritual can create suffering. I'm not gonna lie, I have occasionally freaked out when my baby has skipped his nap time or certain chores or errands haven't gotten done on time. By not being flexible and being present in the moment, suffering was created. Of course, completely unintentionally, but suffering none the less. Had I been truly present in those moments I maybe could have found moments of gratitude and bliss or even opportunity instead of focusing was on what didn't go "right". In these moments of upset I have felt imbalanced. But what if instead we approach balance moment by moment instead of weekly or daily created by ritual? Looking at our present moment and asking ourselves what do I need right now (if anything)? Of course we are still going to have continuing "to do" lists but checking them all off as fast as you can isn't going to create a finished list, as we know, there is always something more to add. S,o we can check off what is going to serve ourselves and our families best in the moment. Sometimes that will mean running errands. Sometimes it will mean resting. Sometimes it will mean having fun.
When approaching balance in our Asana practice we must be present. When our minds are too busy, balance tends to waiver. We make small adjustments in our bodies, breath and mind to find that steadiness we are trying to achieve (not grand ones) balance in a posture. Also, notice the constant subtle movements your body is making to maintain balance. Moving forward, backward and side to side even if just slightly. There isn't such thing as perfect balance. It's the subtle yet constant movement that keeps us balancing. Attaining balance in ones life in no different off that mat than it is on the mat.
Let go of the idea there is perfect balance to attain. Just be present. Be flexible and trust there is opportunity in every moment that doesn't go your way. Pause and ask yourself, "what do I need right now to create balance?"
I would love to hear from you! What are some ways you create balance in your day to day life? Do you prefer routine and if so are you present while performing your daily rituals? Are you attached to your routine, if so why?
xoxo
